You can pull apart the float chamber on an HIF without removing the
carbs from the engine alright. You just can't put them back together
;-).
Actually, you can clean up your floats with the HIF's on the engine, but
it doesn't really make any sense because it will take longer than just
removing the carbs. A mechanic once showed me a trick for adjusting the
float and holding the cut off needle in place while reassembling the
integral float bowl bottom plates. The technique is hilarious. You
attach a length of tube to the fuel intake and with the other end in
your mouth use suction to hold the needle in place. It is as silly as
it sounds, but technically it does work and is a quickie method. Only a
guy with a gun to his head truly has the excuse for doing it that way
instead of the more thorough and reliable way; that is, putting the unit
on the bench and properly inspecting, cleaning, and setting the float
according to spec. But I thought I'd tell you guys about it
anyway....you never know if a crazed maniac will put a gun to your head
and demand a quick HIF float adjustment.
