Don:

The original tire size for the B was 5.60-14 which equates to a 24.60"
diameter. When radials came out the fitment went to a 155 R 14 (23.8") with
the 165 R 14 (24.5") standard on the GT (which had a wider steel wheel) and
an option on the roadster. According to Clausager the 155SR14 was standard
on the MGB roadster till the introduction of the rubber bumper cars, at
which time 165SR14 tires were supplied. This was probably a cost issue,
since stock OE tires always tended to be the cheapest that would meet
minimum specs.

In answer to your question. Many owners went to the 165/14 tires because of
they were generally available and were listed in the owners handbook as the
performance option.

my two bits.
