It runs! But the process had its trials...
First, no oil pressure. Now, I've done the 3 main gasket in a 5 main
engine before. I was 99% certain THAT couldn't be it. Had a glass of
iced tea and decided to remove the oil cooler hose and try to reprime
the pump. I added oil then rolled the engine backwards. Did that a
couple of times and cranked it over. After a few cranks, oil came out
of everywhere. Good. I imagined a lot worse.
Second, no fire. Gots spark, has fuel and air. So I set everything to
TDC and checked the dizzy drive. Looks just like the book. Still no
go. I am also pretty certain the the cam was timed right since I
degreed the cam and it never would have dialed in if I'd been off a
tooth. So I take the dizzy back out and move it one tooth. Bang! that
did it!
Only one oil leak from what looks like one of the lifter covers. Not
too bad. I'll let it cool down and try again in the morning. Every
thing but the tach seems to work. All of the lights and even the
original radio! I like the simple wiring of the early 60's cars.
If all goes well, we try it on the road tomorrow. See how it likes
being out after a 20 year hibernation!
