I've been there. I've run out of gas twice in my life, both times out of
bravado. "I know I can make the next exit". I couldn't.

One of the times I had $1.25 in quarters in my pocket and two miles short
of the exit, I ran out. I only needed about another half gallon to get
home from the gas station.

So I hoof it to the gas station, and I have no gas can, and, yes, $1.25 to
my name. Wife is out of town. Best Friend not answering his cell. Visa is
at the limit after xmas shopping. Bank account drained for the same. Payday
the next day.

Gas station doesn't lend out cans. $7 purchase. I offered to leave my
driver's license as collateral. He opens a drawer and shows me two license
of people who never returned. I ended up calling my boss, believe it or
not, as I was officially on the job (roving computer repair).

So now, ever car I own has an empty 2.5 gallon gas can in the trunk. Taped
to the bottom is an envelope containing $40. Overkill? Perhaps.

I don't yet have a can for the MG, as it's not actually drivable. But when
I do...

I'll get one of those and have it painted the same blue royale as the car.
