First?  Three things - ignition, ignition, ignition.  Check the dwell and
timing, and confirm the timing mark is correct as already suggested.  Is the
tach flicking?  If so the problem is in the ignition LT circuit.  If you
can't reproduce the problem at a standstill then rig a timing light where
you can watch it while driving and look for irregular flashing when you get
the problem.  If the flashes are regular it is unlikely to be an ignition
problem.  Then set the carbs up for airflow and mixture balance from first
principles ... and stop fiddling! ;o)
