Keith,
While this might be an electrical or mechanical malfunction, check to
be _sure_ that the gearbox and OD are filled with the correct oil.
Engine oil is specified, not 90w gear oil. Some recommend the usual
20/50; others prefer straight 30w, but all agree that gear oil is a
mistake, though a common one. Especially in cool weather, the too-heavy
oil can cause strange shifting.
If you don't know for sure what oil is in the unit, try draining and
refilling.
