Third OD (1.1016:1) is just a hair lower than 4th Non-OD (1:1). Every now
and then it is nice to have it in 3rd OD instead of plain 4th just because
it allows you to do a quick disengage - especially nice in the twisties like
Paul says. Also, every now and then, 3rd OD just seems the perfect gear for
tootling through a particular section. On the other hand, you could
reasonably never use OD for anything other than a 5th gear on the highway.
Personally, I like to fiddle while I drive, so it gets used more than that.
