There you go Jim, making me chip in.

For the record. Moss offers free freight on retail orders only for the
following reasons.

1. Any UPS shipment over $500
2. We give out discount flyers for distribution at club events that offer
10% off and free UPS freight if you mail or fax the form in. These flyers
are good for one order only and are intended to increase registration at
club events, and so increase enthusiasm in British cars. Sometimes these
flyers are abused, and may the evil fates pursue those who engage in such
activity.

Please note: Moss uses a system called: Order Value Shipping which allows
us to give you a firm shipping cost based on $ value rather than the actual
shipping cost which does not get calculated until the part is in the box.
Order Value Shipping cost is averaged, which means if you buy a small
expensive part we make money, if you buy a large cheap part (such as repair
sheetmetal) we lose money. All in all we end up breaking even, or a bit
ahead at the end of the year. Shipping is not intended to generate profits.
So long as it pays for actual costs + packaging materials + labor we are
happy.

Don:

Echoing Jims comments. Moss does build in some wholesale margin. We want
our wholesale distributors to be able to make some money on parts.
Unfortunately heavy competition and rising costs are narrowing the margin,
so if you do decide to buy from one of the stocking Moss dealers be nice to
them. Sincerely I ask that you shop based on customer service and the
associated support, such as used parts, rebuilding, service work and advice
rather than selling price.

Moss does offer a Rebuilder discount. The terms are on the next to back
page of the catalogs. It's designed for someone planning on a total rebuild
who can place an initial $2000 order. For one year you get 10% off, or sale
price whichever is lower.

Buying parts is always a balancing act. Retail sales pay for the niceties
like catalogs, British Motoring, the web site, club support etc. Wholesale
sales help to keep a distributed knowledge and service base alive.

If you buy on price alone, profits will drop, shops will go out of business,
club support will dry up and you will end up with a pretty car and no-one to
share it with.

It bears thinking about.

all the best

Kelvin.
