You probably want the book "Original MGB" by A. D. Clausager. This is THE
source for the kind of info you will need. At Moss or Classic Motorbooks, or
maybe even Amazon. You'll also want the reprinted factory service manual by
Robert Bentley.
The correct engine color would be maroon, but a backyard mechanic could have
sprayed it whatever after servicing, so that doesn't tell you much in
itself.

It doesn't clear by much under any circumstances. Might just need new motor
mounts. The timing marks would be straight on the bottom if you have the
correct motor. Convenient, eh?
