Sounds like the piston is rubbing on the chamber cover, does the same thing
happen with the cover on but no needle?  The book says it is permissible to
relieve the inner surface of the cover with metal polish to ensure there
*is* a clearance, that is, after ensuring there is no gunge on either part
i.e. spray on some carb cleaner.  However, the cover should seat properly
and fully without the screws, the screws just holding it in that position.
Possibly your cover is distorted and not seating properly, tightening the
screws distorting it even more causing the binding.  Don't overtighten them,
although the damage may have already been done.  I fill the damper without
bothering to lift the piston, if they end up being overfilled the excess
gets pulled into the engine very rapidly.  Should only need doing very
rarely anyway, like many thousands of miles.
