It could be that it was only excess oil that leaked out. When I
replaced both boots I inadvertently put more oil in than the rated
capacity. When I turned the steering from lock to lock some of the oil
was forced back out from under the then loosely installed cover plate.
I concluded that the boots act as a bellows, forcing the oil back and
forth as the steering is moved from one side to the other. When the
steering's at lock one boot is all the way collapsed and the other is
all the way stretched. Rated capacity must be the contents of the rack
and one stretched boot and the excess gets forced out.
