louvers

I've seen British cars with louvers in the bonnet. Was this a factory
option, an aftermarket product or something that was added to the car later
by some special tooling?

It seems to me that my MGA would be much more comfortable to drive if I
could vent the engine compartment a little.

What does everyone think?
