Gee Whiz Guys, you're flogging a dead horse with this line of
reasoning. The main purpose of the flywheel is to smooth out the
engine pulses at low speed and to give the engine some reserve kinetic
energy for various loads on the engine. Think of it as a mechanical
battery, it does not create torque but it does, in a sense, store it
in the form of residual kinetic energy. A heavy flywheel helps to get
the car moving from a stop and a lightened flywheel allows the engine
to rev faster. Most of the harmonic forces generated by the engine are
supposed to be absorbed by the dampener at the front. Of course there
are variations of this , but you get the idea. Many other factors
relate ot the detonation problem.
Ignition is the big one, lean mixture, high compression , hot spots
caused by deposit build ups in the combustion chamber can all
contribute to this destructive phenomenon. Use this link to get a
better understanding of the forces at work in the mundane Otto Cycle
engine.
