First, do everything Blake said. Not one bit of what he suggests is
overkill.
Having worked with various caustic solutions for many years, I have this one
nutshell caveat: If it gets in your eye you will be hating life, and you
could quite possibly go blind before you have a chance to get help.
I have one friend who cannot drive at night anymore; in the ER, the pH in
his eye had not returned to normal after spending twelve hours getting his
eye flushed with saline. Also, watch out for the aluminium thing - it will
emit toxic gasses in addition to just eating the piece.

Seriously - it's hairy stuff. All said, though, I have never found a
chemical that quite equals caustic for speed and effectiveness in removing
unwanted stuff on metal.
