Thanks for the help folks.
The short was caused by the harness rubbing against the end-plate/starter
mount area.
I drove the car to work today and, of course, it ran fine going to work then
crapped out on the way home .JEEZE IT'S COLD!!!!!
I wasn't totally surprised as the ignition light was getting brighter and
brighter all the time.
Started with a boost courtesy of the wife (Damn! I hate it when that
happens) and ran all the way home then quit in the driveway.
When it warms up a bit , current wind chill is 0*F, I will swap the
alternator out of the 74 and see what happens.
