Steve: I use a stiff, not flexable, 1 1/2 inch putty knife gound to a sharp edge to scape off gasket residue. If you've got air and a die grinder, there's also a neat little wheel that uses Scotch Bright pads to clean up the surface. This wheel might work in a high speed 1/4 inch drill too.
