I'm copying this to the list in case anyone else is interested...
The flywheel's purpose is to store rotational intertia, that is, the
tendancy to keep the engine spinning.
If it is too light, you may have serious idle problems, terrible gas
mileage, and the revs might drop so quickly between gear shifts that you
drop below the power band for the next gear. Also, the engine may
vibrate more (buzzy), which can reduce the lifetime of various parts
and not sound very nice.
The advantages are quicker revving, and increased torque but ONLY in the
lower gears and ONLY at high revs in those gears. The faster you go,
the less advantage it gives, and low-end torque will be reduced, which
is what you use a lot in street driving. Also, a very light flywheel
will hurt standing starts (drag racing) since you cannot store as much
energy in the flywheel before takeoff, and the aforementioned reduction
in low-rpm torque.
Just keep in mind that a parts vendors make a much larger margin of
profit on "performance" items and don't assume that because they sell
it, you should put it on your car. Kind of like rear wings on front
wheel drive cars ;)
