I wouldn't say that's necessarily true (that the spokes would ALL break),
just rather likely that you'd have to replace some of them (or most of
them). So don't even bother trying to adjust the spokes without a good
supply of spares on hand. When you send the wheel to a specialist for
truing, I believe they replace all the spokes as a matter of course (plus
sandblasting and painting the rim and hub)-- hence the daunting bill.
My last investigation into the matter indicated that it was cheaper to buy 4
new painted wires than to have 4 old ones refurbished. Replacing my chrome
wires would be more expensive, enough so that refurb was the cheaper option,
although still a significant expense.
