... but need an ammeter or voltmeter in place of the ignition warning lamp,
and even then you have to be looking at the meter to see a problem, the
warning light is far more likely to catch your attention.  Besides which,
any alternator can be converted to one wire self-exciting by connecting a
resistor of a few tens of ohms between the indicator spade and the output
spade.  IMHO the gains don't outweigh the losses, just my 1 penn'orth.
