Here is the conclusion of the shock link tale!

Most recently, I had removed the shock absorber and was trying to get the
bushing end of the link detached from the damper arm. After extensive
soaking in PB Blaster and applications of heat, I ended up taking the
shock to a local garage. They were able to get the bushing out (and also
put the shock in their parts washer!), so I topped up the shock fluid and
put 'er all back together tonight! And, most importantly, got to drive my
MG again! Yee-hah!

One question remains - how tight should the bolt on the bushing end (the
upper end) of the link be? There does not seem to be much rotation there -
or is that the point? Does the rotation happen inside the bushing itself?
I.e., the bolts moves a bit inside the rubber? I figure that I'll check
all of the shock and link bolts in a week or so anyways.

Thanks to the many listers that responded to my various questions, and
thanks to all for their patience with my tale! I'm pretty psyched to have
tackled this job, and the rear suspension feels nice and tight now. Next
project will probably be the front-end, later this fall. But I'll give you
all fair warning of when I'm going to begin!

Safety 'Well Damped'!
