I guess you haven't been paying attention to all the 'crusher' laws that
keep getting introduced to get older cars off the roads. A small percentage
of older cars is responsible for a huge percentage of pollutants. Any
properly maintained older car is capable of buring fairly cleanly, but there
are those who want to tar all old cars with the same brush.
Now, these laws wouldn't force you to give up your car (yet), but they would
provide incentives for people to turn in their old cars. Sure, it will work
well to get lots of smoking, boring cars off the road, but it's also going
to pull lots of cars out of garages and barns. Future restoration
candidates and more importantly, parts sources, will be lost forever.
You don't have to like SUVs or their popularity, but when you start
targeting them for punitive action based on your perceptions of them, you
can't complain when your car is the next target.
