I suppose I should have phrased it better. I am curious about the
advantages runnning warmer versus cooler. I could see that running
warmer might cause predetonation. I can also see how with my
miscalibrated temperature guage and way to cold thermostat it might
have something to do with impotence of my heater.

I've got an extra row of tubes in my radiator. My miscalibrated temp
guage was always telling me that I was on the verge of overheating, so
I did everything I could to bring the temperature down.
Why doesn't the engine run best with the same temp thermostat all year
round?
