Monte,
You may have another problem as u-joints are most easily heard when you take
your foot off the gas and the pressure is let off the joints. When you are
accelerating you could hear the same noise but I generally associate bad
u-joints making noise when you decelerate.

Subject: "clanking" upon acceleration
I think I have a U-joint problem but want to verify this. On the 67B when I
accelerate in first gear, at first I hear a clanking noise in the rear end
that goes away after accelerating. If I accelerate slowly, I don't get this
clank. I haven't been under the car yet, but it seems from a past memory
buried in my swiss-cheese riddled gray matter that this is most probably the
culprit. What say you?
