My e-type's filter hung down so it stayed filled with oil
via gravity. The stand pipe or non-return valve is, however
an important issue. Some argue that it is unimportant. My
308 uses a high pressure filter and the stand-pipe keeps
the first blast of oil ready at start-up. Given the price of a
rebuild, I prefer to be safe.
