FWIW:
My Datsun pickup has a downdraft carb, cat, and air injection for the
exhaust manifold. However it has no air pump. The exhaust manifold is
constructed like a tuned and self scavaging header. There is a gulp
valve in the air cleaner and an air line running to the exhaust
manifold. Thus the exhaust pulses coming down the manifold draw clean
and fresh air from the cleaner and there is no pump to drive.
