With the ignition on and the engine not running the pump should click no
more than once every 30 secs. More often indicates a fuel leak somewhere or
bad valves in the pump. Maybe a float valve is weeping, the float chamber
is filling up, and the engine is stalling because of the richening mixture.
If you fitted a non-vented tank what did you do about the remainder of the
emissions plumbing, particularly the overflows from the carbs? And are you
sure you still have sparks?
