I recently had a similar problem. Had done some electrical work on my mgb
(replaced radio). I finished the job, cleaned up, put my tools back in the
toolbox in the boot, and prepared for a test drive. Pulled out of the
driveway, lost my rear lights, and smoke filled the car.

I shut it off, and pulled out my newly installed radio. Nothing there
was wrong. Got to thinking about the problem, and decided to look
in the boot. As luck would have it, my tool box had slid back a few
inches as I pulled away, and firmly pinned a bullet connector to the metal
body of the car. Of course, the plastic insulator around the connector
wasn't covering the entire bullet, and I had a dead short!

Well, I carefully taped up all of the connectors in the boot, and the
wires to the headlamp switch, and no problems since then. It's a shame
my wiring got a bit toasty, but it wasn't a total loss...

Check all of your bullet connectors and make sure none is grounded out...
