It's easy to screw it up if you don't know what you're doing, but if
you're really in to DIY head work, buy Peter Burgess' book, HOW TO
POWER TUNE MGB, to see what the master suggests. It's easy to take off
too much metal, and very difficult to put it back. So far as
port-matching goes, keep the intakes slightly larger than the manifold,
and the exhausts slightly smaller, to take advantage of the
anti-reversion effect.
I just had my B's head and intake manifold done at Mike Brown's Seven
Shop in Oregon, including bigger intake valves, new standard size
exhaust valves, special guides, and most of the tricks mentioned by
Burgess, for little more than half the $1200 fee you mention. I think
Burgess is close to that price too, but shipping to the UK and back
would cost a fortune.
