I believe it is for the same reason that a cold engine needs a richer mixture - 
the mixture 
is harder to ignite inside "cold" engine.  Pinging(pinking) is caused by 
pre-iginition of 
the air/fuel mixture -- that is the mixture catched fire before the spark plug 
would 
otherwise ignite it.
