I think you got it Monte, however my experience tells me it's more than
a tap...
Loosen the nut just enough to have a small space between the nut and the
mating surface, and make sure there are no threads protruding beyond the
nut. This will help preserve the integrity of the threads during the
process. Smack the nut hard, once. Oh, yeah, one more thing, its not a
big hammer, it's a BIG hammer. One of the hammers is to stablize (add
mass to) the steering mechanisim, the other is to do the loosening. A
series of tap taps isn't gonna get it. This isn't something you ease
out. When you hit it it will either be loose or not loose ... No
inbetween.
If, after you hit the nut, the space disapears then it's loose.
