Well, he might have previously clipped a curb and the spokes might
have been chrome-plated and/or misadjusted. If the car went into
oversteer or skidded out and then, while the rear wheels were going
sideways, hit a curb or even a large crack, that might well do the
job.
The MGA I raced in the 60's had wire wheels, but they were
well-tuned and cared-for. Never had any trouble with them at all.
