The easiest way I know to prime the pump during a rebuild or replacement: Pack the pump with petroleum jelly before installing. It is easier to work with and will not drip all over the place. The jelly will mix with the oil as soon as the engine starts turning. Also, as preventive maintainance, change the oil at 500 miles after a rebuild.
