I always like reading about the good fortune people have when working on
their MGs so I thought I would share mine. There are some questions at the
end about rear differential clunk, for those that like to help.
What a weekend, the weather was great this weekend and I was blessed to have
the opportunity to do some much needed maintenance on the B. Played hooky
half the day on Friday. Looked into what was going on with the grinding
drum brake. What a mess. One of the pads was completely gone and the
other looked new. I think I can attribute that to one of the Tappet
adjusters being shorter than the other (1/4 inch difference). Does that
sound right?
On the other side the rear wheel cylinder was frozen. So, I was basically
using a quarter of the braking power available through the drums. Replaced
both the cylinders (circlips were a major pain), cleaned up the mess, had
drums turned, replaced the long brake line (broke in removal of cylinder)
with a generic from parts house, my first attempt of brake line bending.
This entire process took me a total of ~10 hours. Which included many
trips to parts supplier and a SUV oil change. Not too bad. Now I know
nearly everything to know about the drum brakes building that confidence!
Saturday evening I took the B for a 1 = hour trip to the in-laws and spent
the night. Sunday morning got out to the B at about 10 am and flushed the
heater core (stopped putting out heat the night before), put on the new
speedo cable (no more bouncing needle), adjusted the drums a little (now
have a better working emergency brake), changed out steering wheel to the
wood rimmed one I got for Christmas 2 years ago, and most importantly
checked the plugs to see how the mixture is. They looked great, looks like
the ABD needles are doing the trick and the Air/Fuel mixture gauge is
reading correctly. Yippee!
So all that said, the never ending project that this car is, I am looking
into the future at the next weekend project THE CLUNK. She got it and
along with it there is a whining under throttle at 50+ mph. Does that sound
terminal? There is about 10-15 degrees of play in the differential when the
car is in gear and one wheel elevated (wheels are snug to the hub and no
play there). No in-out play on the wheels. My conclusion and my non-LBC
neighbor think this is pinion play. Correct? What am I looking at? What
parts in the Moss catalog do I need to order, if I can fix it? Without
having the manual in front of me how involved is the fix? Removal of the
new gas tank to get to it?
