Yes and no. They don't any more attention than any car built up to the
early 70's. I had a 1960 Rambler. It needed oil changes every 1000
miles, and something like a lube every 5,000 (or once a year), a minor
tune up (adjust valves, points, plugs, and) about every 10,000 miles, a
major tune up at 25,000 miles etc., rotate tires every 2000, and replace
at 15,000. It's just that we're spoiled by the put in the gas and go
modern vehicle.
And then, there's just a lot of deterioration from setting.
On my TD I do the following every spring. Most of it has to be done
because the car has been sitting for 5 months.
Change oil, lube, bleed brakes, and check spark timing. Every other
year a coolant change. Otherwise I mostly follow the schedule according
to the mileage.
The only failure I've had on the road which made the car inoperable was
a bad condenser, and the new replacement was bad.

Oh, I forgot about the tranny loosing a few teeth, but I had a 1965
Ambassidor do the same thing when it jumped out of gear due to vibration
from wheel hopping.
