Tyson,
  There are actually two balls in the OD. If you have the Bentley manual,
illustration Fc2,  one of them is #59, "valve ball", that fits against
the solenoid, and another is #35, "valve ball", that fits into the spring
on top of the pump plug. 
  The solenoid ball will fall out if the solenoid is taken apart, so if
you haven't seen it, it was probably not there.
