Oil burning usually results in blue smoke. White/gray smoke is usually
indicative of water/antifreeze getting into the cylinders.
You have already done a compression test, and cylinder 1 is low. I'd start
there. Check to see if there is oil in the antifreeze and antifreeze in the
oil. If there is, it could be caused by a bad head gasket. The next step is
to do a blow down test on the cylinder. Pressurize the cylinder and check the
reading. See if it goes down. Also, look and listen. If there is a hissing
from the dipstick hole, through the oil fill hole (this could also be caused
by worn rings), or if bubbles come into the coolant resevoir you have isolated
the problem. Pull the head, and check the gasket. When you did the valve
job, was the head checked for flatness or skimmed? If there is no apparent
problem, have the head Magnafluxed to check for cracks.
