Thanks for replying:
Usually the diodes seem to be failing on the alternators, but sometimes
it is
individual wires inside simply disconnecting.  I've been getting free
rebuilds
because of the lifetime warranty, but I am starting to think I should
just start
fixing them myself.
Thanks for your help, I'm off to attempt to fix the tach.
