The light flashes when there is a spark. If there is no spark, the current
has not grounded and therefore hasan't flowed.
The question is, is the erratic spark the cause of the problem, or is it the
result of another problem.
The coil normally gets warm, I don't think it should get hot. Coils are
realtively inexpensive, I'd replace it.
But that brings to mind a question. 80B's normally have a 6 volt coil and use
a ballast resistor to step down the volts. It is possible that in the car's
past, someone replaced the ignition system, since the OE system was failure
prone, and did it incorrectly, and you know have 12V running through a 6V
coil. This would cause the heat you mention. The heat would cause coil
failure.
The excessive voltage could also cause failure of the cap and rotor.
Check out the ignition, and if thproblem isn't apparent get back in touch.
I'd need to know:
When does it sputter, all the time, occassionaly, when it's hot, damp or
what.
