Well, just to add weight to the argument already put forward, I suggest
this is an electrical fault and look for a poor Earth - or dead battery
... which could mean the battery wasn't being charged... oh dear, check
the battery first.

If the battery is OK, then I would lean toward a poor earth. somewhere.

And one place to look is where I found my intermittent earth problem -
and that is the ground/earth lead from the battery to the car
chassis/body. This problem went on for ages. It would be fine for days
and days, then suddenly... CLICK... fiddle with the battery terminals
and off we go again.

Under the car the connection can get caked in road crud and this is what
happened to me. The connection had become loose and had aquired an
insulating surround of muck - providing poor or no path to earth. When
I fiddled with the connector ON the battery I could bring the car to
life. This led me to believe that it was the battery terminal, or
battery end of the cable. I replaced the connector and even thought
about replacing the battery because I thought the terminal on the
battery was suspect. What was happening was when I fiddled with the
connector ON the battery - it was moving the other end of the cable at
the same time, making the proper earth contact again.

It was only when I decided to replace the whole earth cable that I
really found the problem under the car.

Visually it looked ok and when prodded it didn't seem loose (it really
was caked in road muck). When I started to undo it, however, and the
road muck came free I could tell how loose it was. I replaced it anyway
(just in case) and have had many miles of trouble-free motoring ever since.
