 From my experience, its easier to pull the engine without the 
transmission. And then you have to support the transmission while the 
engine is out. But putting the engine back in by itself is much harder - I 
spent the good part of a day once, just trying to get it to line back up 
with the transmission. Never again.

So in short, you are better off doing it the standard way with both 
transmission/engine. There is a key trick involved though - you have to 
have a hoist with a pulley that allows you to lift the front of the engine 
higher when you pull it all out (so the transmission points down steeply to 
clear the tunnel). With the right technique, its not really so hard.
