This is a bit of a fiddle, but one way to do it is: buy a new electronic V8
tach with the same "sweep" (angle from 0 to 6000 rpm or whatever on the
face). Remove and disassemble the stock tach, and disassemble the new tach.
Figure out how to mount the guts of the new tach to the back of the old
faceplate (the guts of the new one will undoubtably be much smaller and
lighter -- two tiny screws through the faceplate might do it, or even
superglue). Then use the stock needle for appearance's sake (it might need
some adaptation) and reassemble. The new tach will probably wire directly to
the distributor -- very simple.
