The proper way to make this conversion is to cut off the dash mounting
flange and weld on one from an early car or fabricate a new one (not too
difficult, but somewhat time consuming).  It's best to cut one off an
early car so you can see how it will fit in your car, and then cut out
the flange accordingly.

The early flange is at a right angle to the dash, where the later type
is at a 45 degree angle.  Having a smooth fold between the two is
essential for a good, clean appearance with the early dash and pad.
