Hi Paul,
Thanks, big time, for your advice:
I did check the fuses ( they were ok ) and even reseated all the connectors
under the hood to no avail.
I will commence with your other suggested steps.
... and I thought I was going to escape these Lucas electrical demons
...silly me
Steve

Are the gauges, brake lights, reverse lights OK? If not check the 2nd-fuse
up in the 4-way fuse-block.
If that's OK check the hazard switch - try flicking it on and off a few
times. The turn flasher supply goes via this switch (when off) so the turn
and hazard flashers don't interfere with each other. If that does the trick
then the hazard switch needs dismantling and cleaning, the grease in it
solidifies as it gets little use.
If flipping the switch doesn't help you will have to get your test-lamp or
volt-meter out and check the two green wires on the hazard switch. With the
ignition on and the hazards off both should carry 12v. If neither do there
is a break in the green back towards the fuse, if one does the switch is bad
as before, if both do then move on to the hazard flasher.
This is located on the drivers-side firewall inside the cabin and has green
and light-green/brown wires. Don't confuse it with the voltage stabiliser
which is close by and has green and light-green/green wires. If neither
wire on the turn flasher shows 12v there is a break back towards the hazard
switch. If one wire shows 12v then the turn flasher is faulty. If both
wires show 12v then move on to the turn switch.
If you do replace the turn flasher make sure that it of the type that
flashes either faster or slower if one bulb is out - test it!
