Well, actually, I hate bogging my engine down. I still have a 4 speed in my
car -- one that I rebuilt myself -- which is to say that I have stuck with oem
pieces. I imagine that we agree on more than you think -- sorry if I
mis-communicated in the earlier message.
I will, though, defend myself on one point. In the miles I've done in an o/d
car (and yes, those miles are few compared to the 125K+ I've done in my 'B) it
has seemed pretty awkward. Or, more to the point, not as simple as a normal
shift.
If I were to undertake the large-ish project of putting in a different gearbox,
I would personally rather have a slightly more complicated initial installation
and have absolute, no explanation required simplicity from the drivers seat.
One last thought. I know I'm not the only person here who has accidentally hit
the wiper switch while autocrossing. 'nuff said.
