Bill,
I used to go to Gilroy, Calif. quite often. Darn town was named after an AWOL
sailor that had jumped ship in Monterey, BC (Before it was California) When
approached by the local Policia (Mexican Police) they asked heem
"Senor...whot ezz chore namb?" To which using, his Scottish wile and charm,
he answered "Well, its William Gilroy, it is." Realizing he had no warrants
or hold papers for a William Gilroy, the Mexican officer let the wily sailor
go. Later this same sailor settled down in the area and became one of its
leading citizens. In fact he was so well respected that when it came time to
honor one of the towns founders by naming the town after them, they all chose
the name "Gilroy" Only later when some historians were writing the towns bio
did they uncover the truth the mans real name was James McClendon or
something,
Boy, there were a lot of red faces for a while especially taking into
consideration the fact that "This great and noble forefather", Wm. Gilroy was
in truth a small time crook and scoundrel, until he had that eventful run in
with the Mexican Policeman and decided to change more than his name, but
change his entire lifestyle! Now the townpeople of Gilroy, Calif. are proud
to tell people who come there "It doesn't matter who you were, only who you
are today!" Of course just as long as you don't take it too literal! It's
great sportscar country with long flat straights and curvy mountain roads.
And lots of very, very scenic country roads with redwoods, wineries,
orchards, farms and Big Sur only about 45mi.away.Now where were we? C'ya!!
