I'll expand the details of the car a little. All the clutch hydraulics were
rebuilt last December. It is a non-overdrive transmission. This is John's
only transportation. I already told him about not forcing anything, since
it should work smoothly. I have a spare transmission I could fit this
coming weekend, but I'd rather keep working on getting my 74 done in time
for Rendezvous 2001 this November.
What John told me on the phone was that he was having trouble getting the
car in gear, so he forced the lever into reverse. No grinding, just
wouldn't go into gear. I told him he should have put it in neutral, let the
clutch out, then retried. Could he have bent anything in the transmission?
The clutch was working fine before this glitch. Could forcing it into gear
affect the clutch? I don't think so, but.....
I'd really appreciate any help on this. I'm just not sure what goes on
inside the transmission.
Thanks,
Ken

Subject: tranny problems
last night i parked my '79 MGB on a hill and put the e brake on. when i got
back in the car and started it i think i used to much force putting it in
reverse to get outta the parking spot. now the car does not shift smoothly.
the gears normally dont grind, but i have to double clutch to get into gear
sometimes. reverse is the worse, but it also resists going into fist and
second. 3rd and 4th gear dont seem to be affected. any ideas what could be
wrong? will it require pulling the engine + tranny? please help.
