There is no other way except to jump in. Practicing on a scrapped car
is okay, but not necessary. The Practical Classics series on MGBs are
good, as is Lindsay Porter's book.
Unfortunately, the buy-in costs are pretty steep. You need a MIG welder
for around $500, a 4" angle grinder, and air tools are a big plus,
especially an air chisel. Of course, you need a full compliment of hand
tools as well. It adds up fairly quickly, but it is still much less
than the cost of paying someone else to do it (if you can even find
someone), and you'll have all those neat tools you'll wonder how you
ever lived without!
