  I don't think you really need those clips. They fell off my car years
ago, yet I have been quite happy without them.
  The screen that looks like chromed window screen is so restrictive of
air flow that you might as well block the opening.  I compromise by using
a black plastic "gutter" screening  (yes, house guttter) that blocks the
majority of leaves and maple spinners that would get into the opening. 
Cut it to size and push the pegs of the grille through it and into the
six holes.  Remove the grille & screen, and clean the pit annually with a
vacuum cleaner.
