As you may remember from my earlier email about it never being too late to
learn to DIY on your MG, I have rebuilt my carbs... (and am starting to
question the whole never to late to learn thing :-)
Well, I have been messing around with adjusting them over the past week and
just can't seem to get it right...
<Background>
about 2 weeks before attempting the rebuild, I bought the Brooklands book,
"SU Carburetters, Tuning tips and Techniques". One of the features of this
book is the appendices that list various makes and models of car and what SU
they had and what the proper SU Part numbers for the parts for that
particular make and model are...
When I bought my carb rebuild kit, I told the helpful clerk at my local MG
supply house what carbs I had (AUD326) and that my car was a 1969, and he
went off and put the kit together and pulled out what he said were the
correct needles, I (being a neophyte and not totally confident with this
process) didn't question the fact that on the list it has been said in the
past that the correct needle for AUD326 carbs is the "AAE"... The needles I
was given were marked "6". I figured it was some marking system that I
didn't know about and never gave it much thought...
</Background>
So tonight I was perusing the charts in the apendices of the Brookland SU
tuning book (yeah I know, nerdly...) and discovered that the needle marked
"6" is SU part number AUD1005 and the needle marked "AAE" is part number
CUD1004, so I think maybe the clerk may have just made a thoughless
mistake...
So I look to WinSU (Thank you Scott Beavis, fabulous program!) and compare
the 6 to the AAE and
discover that they, to my untrained eye, aren't that different, the 6 being
a little richer mid to high range...
Just how different are they? should I keep the 6's? should I swap it for the
AAE's? Could this be contributing to why I am having trouble getting the
carbs adjusted properly?
Oh, the dilema. Input greatly appreciated!
