Hi Bill,
I seriously considered buying a spitfire last year. I got a lot of advice,
saw a lot of cars, spoke to a lot of mechanics. Personally I would consider
a MkIV (74 and later i think). They are the prettiest, largest, and have
bugs like the rear suspension sorted. Advantages: the MkIV spit is
definately, to my eye, more aesthetically pleasing than the B. It handles
incredibly, just like a go-cart. Overdrive is almost standard, i have never
seen one for sale without OD. In the later spits at least the interior is
just as roomy as the B. The whole engine and front end is one hell of a lot
easier to work on. Disadvantages: possibly slightly noiser. certainly feels
a little less solid (but having said that i know a couple of miraculous
escapes from spits in wrecks). Rumour / advice: most people were of the
impression that the B was more reliable, certainly as a daily driver or for
long trips. Having said that i know people who use a spit as a daily driver.
At the end of the day it is probably, just like the B, more down to the
quality of previous maintenance and workmanship than anything else. I also
never rely on my own eye and alwyas take a car to a specialist mechanic to
check out. It has saved me a number of times!
So what happened to me? I found a beautiful B before I found a beautiful
spit, but i would still love to own a MkIV. If i had the disposable income i
would definately own both! ;-)
I idly saw a couple of good deals a month or so ago at the site where i
found my B (which was a great deal!)

good luck.
cheers
Joe
